It all started in the winter of 2002. Formed by Eric Labrie (Lamentations R.I.P., Carpathian gate R.I.P.), the project was only a draft of his ambitions, in the form of a Dark Wave, Dark Ambient and Down tempo musical genre. Named “Winter of Fantasy” at the time, the project was never professionally released but produced three demos: “To die under a winter moonlight”, “Epitaph” and “The guardian of malediction”. The sound changed a lot through these three experiments and evolved to a more classically and symphonically oriented style of music. During this time, Eric began to study oriental and occidental classical music theories from Masters like Mendehlsonn, Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, etc.

In the summer of 2006, after three years of experimentation and a year of silence, Eric decided to put forth this project and produced his first professional release under a new name: Shadows of memories. “Equilibrium”, the first part of a trilogy, took 2 years to complete during which time eric welcomed a new member to the project, the mezzo-soprano singer Mireille Tessier. The project also changed name, to be called “Kalte Traurigkeit” (which means cold sadness). Mireille brought new ideas to the music of Kalte Traurigkeit from her influences, chant experience and, of course, her talent, which transformed the project’s approach to music to a more sensible one that made listeners out breathing. Her very wide range enabled the creation of more complexe choirs and vocal arrangements. After a year of composition, they entered, in October of 2007, the H.E.A.D. studio engineered by Olivier Rheaume. The studio session was completed in July 2008 and “Equilibrium” was officially released on January 17th 2009 at Le centre d’art la Chapelle.

In the beginning of 2009, Kalte Traurigkeit signed a consignement contract with the american gothic label Shinto records. This collaboration gave a better circulation to the project. It was brought to diverse compilations, got reviews from a lot of webzine, etc. In march of 2009, Kalte Traurigkeit posted an ad to find a violoncellist and got an answer from Francis Delisle (only two hours after the posting of the said ad). Francis Delisle, a young, very talented music student who plays in the Symphonic Orchestra of Lévis, showed interest in the project....
